Building health

I did not realize that biking for fun would be so healthy. I took it slow as I have some very cranky arthritis. I rode mostly on the Trolley Trail which has slight inclines and is good to re-learn on. I started by feeling out of breath on even those slight inclines from the Plaza to 63rd St. Within a week I was riding all the way to 75th St. and though it was a workout I felt that I was bulding my strength and stamina. I ride in empty parking lots - I do circles and swerve back and forth to get the feel of the bike. I ride inclines over and over again to make my legs stronger. It is all good. I bought a bike with just three gears. I think I should have gone with 21 or whatever they sell now but this is good for a start.

All I just wanted to say is I got my bike in July. I feel like I am ten years old when I am riding it. I am way past ten. I ride in Loose Park( though the hills kill me), The Trolley Trail, Kauffman Foundation and Discovery Center Lake. I enjoy riding it very much. I took my plastic recycling in a bag to a recycle bin near my house last week. They also take newspapers there. I can ride to the Post Office, Library, grocery store and near-by restaraunts. I rode it to the Plaza Art Fair. I used the bike to take me to check out a book last week. I do ride the bike almost every day instead of using the car. I have to use the car to go to work as I work various shifts. I am still learning the rules of the road because when I was a kid riding we did not have all the helmets and trails etc..

Rain

Today rain got me to get the rain gear out. Rain jacket and pants work but they are not as good as I would like. It is easy to sweat in them. Riding in the rain I take it easy. I am planning to go about 11,12 mph that way I don't work up a sweat. My average coming into work was 11.5 mph. My normal speed would be about 14 mph. I put my gear in some panniers. Nothing got wet except for my feet. 70 degrees is warm enough so that I just wore sandles. When it is colder I will put my socks inside some plastic bags, and the shoes over the plastic bags. The hood of my rain jacket goes under my helmet. I enjoyed the ride.
